|Opine #3: Stop Blaming Your Shit On God|
Well, Jack Phillips, owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop in Lakewood, Co., I read your article in the Washington Post today. Like your bible, your article is full of conflicting statements. It inspired and motivated me to write the following.
You are clearly upset. People in your town have judged your beliefs and your actions to be wrong. Now, some are acting on their belief. Yet it started when you judge these men for marring and acted on your beliefs.
Jack -" I told the men who are suing me that, even though I couldnt design a custom cake to celebrate their same-sex marriage, Id be happy to sell them anything else in my shop or create a cake for them for another occasion."
So Jack, you won't make a cake for their wedding day but say a housewarming cake for the home they move into after they are married, you'd do?
Jack- "The God that I serve, whose arms are open to all,"
All except gay people who marry? Or is it gay people who marry and have sex? Or just people who are gay? All means everyone clearly your god's arms are not open to all.
Jack - "It is troubling to imagine what the future looks like for me and the millions of others whether Muslims, Orthodox Jews or fellow Christians who believe as part of their faith that marriage is the union of a man and a woman."
Let me remind you Jack that simply because millions believe some thing to be true does not make it true. Over the last ten thousand years thousands of people from all races, faiths and countries believed owning another human was right. How many people in the past and in the present believe the earth is flat? Millions believe that to have sex with children is right. Hitler and his followers believed they were right to murder six million people. How many hundreds of years did millions of Catholics believe God didn't want them to eat meat on Friday?
Segue... Frankly I don't believe god gives a rats ass what we eat or when we eat it. I can not picture God, omnipotent creator of everything, sitting there drawing up menus... Muslims, no pork for you. Hindus, nothing from the cow for you. Catholics, it's a fish stick every Friday for you. Jews, no pork or lobster (that sucks) and don't let your meat and dairy touch. Say Wha? Are you telling me god has Brumotactillophobia? Really, God has OCD? God is angry, happy, loving, vengeful... maybe god is bi-polar too. Or maybe people just make up shit and toss "god said" in there to manipulate others in to believing it.
Back to judgment...
Lets review some things that your Christian bible says about judgment:
John 8:7 - So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
Matthew 7:1 - Judge not, that ye be not judged.
Luke 6:37 - Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:
It also says:
Romans 16:17 - Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offenses contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.
Matthew 7:15 - Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
The first three quotes tell one not to judge and the second two tell you to judge and act on how you judge them. That's confusing.
The following two have different translations. To me these two do not mean the same thing. I also have an issue with a "free pass" that is implied simply because someone has declared you to be spiritual. That alone is another judgment which may or may not be true.
1 Corinthians 2:15: The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one.
1 Corinthians 2:15: But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.
My truth be told... I have issues with a book that says it's the world of god BUT has many versions of said book. Either it's the word of god or it's the word of god that has been altered to fit some man's needs. Hence not the word of god. The fact is the bibles, old and new, are simply what some people said god told them. Do you believe everything people tell you? In a court of law that would be called hearsay and is not allowed because it is not reliable or proveable. Can you prove god said these things?
Nowhere is there a book that was actually written by the hand of god. God is all powerful but evidently not powerful enough write his own book of rules?
The old testament was written by a group of men who wandered around a relatively small patch of desert for forty years, suffering from dehydration and eating smutted rye. Dehydration causes hallucinations, as does smutted rye. The smut on rye is the rye ergot fungus. It causes hallucinations as in LSD. No wonder they saw talking burning bushes or thought god said to kill his son and hours later, when he was coming down... oh god changed his mind and a ram will do. Or take my handmaid so you can have a son. Really? It's not like she wrote it. It wouldn't be the first or last time a man lied about what his wife said. People do and say crazy shit when they are tripping...
I can't get behind any religion that excludes, subjugates, enslaves, persecutes or condones the murder of other humans. It's not just the bibles. The Koran is just as bad. God is vengeful but god is kind. God is loving but god is angry. These are all human emotions that humans use to explain shit they don't understand. Rather than saying (admitting) they don't know the answer, they make up a story and blame it on god. God will protect me, why did god let this happen? Why is god punishing me? Maybe you are suffering the consequences of your actions or choices. Or maybe some humans are assholes who do mean things. We humans do not know the answers to all the mysteries. If we judge based on hearsay and supposition we close our minds to the truths yet to be revealed.
